Choosing a Company
As you will discover after opening the Yellow Pages or 'TNT' magazine to select your mover, there is
often a dazzling array of different companies all offering 'top class service' or claiming to be 'number one in the world'. The one
thing that is true about an international household removal is that old maxim - you get what you pay for! We would suggest that
as a guideline on who to select, you consider the following:
Will they send an estimator to view your effects free of charge and without obligation? Every company should be able to do
this - if you're out of the area they can send you a self estimate form which you complete and return to them See our
estimate form.
Are they members of FIDI? Membership to the Fédération Internationale des Déménageurs
Internationaux - the International Federation of International Furniture Removers FIDI, gives access to BONDED quality overseas
agents to carry out the destination portion of your move; ask to see a FIDI certificate too.
Are they members of the British Association of Removers Overseas Group? Ask to see the company's BAR Overseas Group
Membership certificate when the estimator visits - only BAR Overseas Group members are qualified to carry out international moves
and are uniquely bonded to do so - some BAR members are only qualified to conduct inland moves.
Are they genuine members of a recognised international bonding scheme? Currently the only full cover scheme in the UK is that
offered by the BAR Overseas - the BAR/IMMI scheme.
Do they have adequate modern, alarmed storage facilities, as your goods may not be shipped immediately? Check out their
facilities if you have the time - ask to see a photo, or better still, suggest a visit. If they don't want you to come, they may
have something to hide.
Do they use their own packing crews, or sub-contractors? Many companies - even large ones - use sub-contracted labour. It is
impossible for such companies to adequately ensure the packing quality standards offered by sub-contractors - it will be you, the
client that suffers in the long run.
Have they been in business for more than 10 years? This is a good yardstick to use - it takes this long to foster and develop
relationships with overseas agents.
Excess International Removals are not the biggest in the industry, nor do we pretend to be. We rate as the top UK based
International Remover in terms of shipments handled, and amongst the top 5 UK movers in terms of containers shipped; and we undoubtedly handle more baggage and personal effects by air than any other remover in Europe.
Nevertheless, we are proud of the fact that as a medium sized, profitable, US$ 20m+ turnover Company, we are able to offer a
much more personal service than the largest corporate removals companies. In addition to our International Moving Division, we
handle major contracts at Heathrow and Gatwick Airports on behalf of BAA, the airport operator, and we are the largest
non-government/airline mover of excess and unaccompanied baggage in Europe, handling almost 30,000 consignments a year. Ask our
competition how many they can successfully handle!
